Interview: House of Darwin
Inspired by earthy and nostalgic tones, House of Darwin is a celebration of creativity, culture and sentiment. Established by Shaun Edwards, this social enterprise reinvests its profits into social programs in remote Indigenous communities and has now welcomed its first flagship store in the heart of Darwin. When presented with a blank canvas for this new retail space, a custom Tint was the perfect option.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your painting experience... Would you say you’re a paint newbie or a Michaelangelo in the making?
Ello friends - Shauny Edwards - 27 - favourite colour is uluru red - born in Darwin and very fresh on the painting scene! I'm lucky enough to have a few friends who do this for a living - so that got us through!
What was the project you undertook with us and how did it go?
We've recently opened up our flagship store for a social enterprise I run called House of Darwin.
We create Territory inspired products and then reinvest the profits back into social programs in remote Indigenous communities. We had the world class architect group Akin Atelier draw up a concept that we're so happy with!
The store has a 4M wide skylight which pays homage to the beautiful sunsets we have here in the NT! The sun is life!
What was the paint process like for you? Take us through the motions of how you got the job done, your inspo for this project.
I'm inspired by neutral earthy tones that make me feel calm and nostalgic. I'm constantly inspired by the changing landscape as you travel the NT. Our clothes racks are built from rocks that I took from my childhood beach near home at Mandorah across the bays.
Any advice for novice painters who love what you’ve done and want to try their hand at it?
Preparation is key. If you're a turbo individual like me - get a cool calm collected person to help prepare the walls!
Favourite thing about your fresh Tint?
The professionalism of the delivery to a remote location and the cool calm feel it gives to the space!
