Interview: Tess of Labour of Love Reno
This week, we went behind the scenes with Tess from Labour of Love Reno as she created a DIY Arch in her bedroom.
1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your painting experience... Would you say you’re a paint newbie or a Michaelangelo in the making?
I am no skilled painter but each time I take on a renovation I become a little more confident. However, I hadn’t taken on a project quite like this before, normally I play it safe and paint everything white but I wanted to create a bit of fun in this space.
2. What was the project you undertook with us and how did it go?
I decided to take a risk and paint some colour onto our master bedroom wall to create an arched bedhead using Tint’s Dawn Patrol colour. In the past I have opted to incorporate pops of colour using textiles which can be changed up but I wanted to go bold and push myself to create a unique space. This meant pushing outside my comfort zone and rolling colour onto the wall, and I’m so glad I did, it’s the perfect feature for the space.
3. What was the paint process like for you? Take us through the motions of how you got the job done, your inspo for this project.
Arches have been a growing trend lately and I thought about incorporating an arched niche into the room, but this proved to be too involved for the project. I wanted to keep things simple and do the work myself, so painting allowed me to create something unique without needing a tradesman. Once I had the idea, I ordered some samples from Tint and tested them out in the space. The room is situated facing West, which is perfect for watching the sunset over the water, but it means the lighting changes dramatically throughout the day. I popped the sample stickers up on the wall and came back throughout the day to check how the colour looked in the different light. Once I decided on my colour, I sent my order off to Tint and it arrived at my door. I found this part of the process really handy and it takes away the intimidation that I sometimes feel shopping at a paint desk.
4. Any advice for novice painters who love what you’ve done and want to try their hand at it?
If you’re thinking of adding some colour to your room, I say don’t be afraid to give it a go and add your own personality to the space. Make sure you’ve got the tools for the job, Tint offers a small accessories kit which takes out the guesswork. To get the perfect arch, cut a piece of string, attached a pencil to one end and a thumb tack to the other, this way you can place the pin in the centre and trace out a perfect arch, it’s easier than you think, I thought I would end up with pencil all over the wall but got the perfect arch on the first go. Tint’s painters tape is also super helpful to ensure you tint inside the lines, and make sure to remove the tape while the paint is still wet for the perfect finish.
5. Favourite thing about your fresh Tint?
I’m so glad I picked the colour Dawn Patrol for this space, it’s the perfect shade of blush pink. The arch is the focal point of the room and gives so much wow factor, and the curved lines add a softness to the space. The best part is the arch perfectly frames the bed while also saving me the expense of a costly bedhead!
