Interview: Alex Drewniak
We recently joined forces with the super cool Artist Alex Drewniak (@ladydrewniak on the gram), to create the perfect colour match one of her fave threads. Talk about a match made in heaven! The result was bang on — a lilac custom hue that couldn't be more delightful if it tried. Here's what the lady herself had to say about the project.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your painting experience... Would you say you’re a paint newbie or a Michaelangelo in the making?
Im Alex Drewniak, Melbourne based music + fashion photographer. Love the adrenaline and speed of both environments, and missing them like crazy at the moment!
Love to get my hands dirty and keep myself creatively stimulated most of the time…Throw a basketball at me, a rolling pin, a paint brush and look, I’ll give it a go.

Talk us through the project you undertook with us and how you reckon it went.
Currently renting so can’t paint my landlords walls, despite how much I would kill to jazz up a couple corners of the house. So, I thought I’d do something a little different.
I live with my best friend who is a fashion designer, so I'm constantly surrounded by fabrics and Pantone colour books. With the help of the Pico colour matching device, I decided to pick one of her Spring/Summer 2020 garments, colour match to it, and see whether Tint could mix me a paint of the same colour so I could shoot it in studio.
The fabric colour was called “Ocean Lavender”, and TINT produced a colour that was to the degree, perfect.

What was the paint process like for you? Take us through the motions of how you got the job done.
The paint and tools were delivered basically over night. Everything I needed was in the kit, so I literally just unpacked all the bits and pieces and clipped my backdrop up with C stands and pegs…
Cranked some tunes. Stirred it up. And got into it. Proud of myself for not making a mess… I was paranoid I’d step into like the tray and walk through the white cyclorama with it (totally and Alex thing to do).
Only needed 2 coats of paint, and let it dry. Voila.
A few days later, I got Kirsty @boskemperstudios to come through and to actually shoot the garment. I decided to shoot on polaroid, and bring in some fresh lavender to tie it all in.

Any advice for novice painters who love what you’ve done and want to try their hand at it?
OH! It's easy, and creativity it limitless… I got inspired from a deep Pinterest scroll, and used what I had at my disposal.
Favourite thing about your fresh Tint?
I can reuse and rework it now with future client work. And I feel proud that I did it myself. There is a sense of authenticity with it now far beyond just purchasing something pre-made.
