Our two most popular whites — how to pick

So Fresh and So Clean vs Old School – Our Two Most Popular Whites (and how to choose)

Picking a white paint can often feel like the hardest decision of a renovation — we get it. Below I will break down the difference between our two most popular whites and how I would pick between them in the hope it helps you find the one for your home.

Two whites from our collection stand out as firm favourites with Tint customers: So Fresh and So Clean and Old School.

I shared a quick comparison on Instagram the other day:

So Fresh and So Clean

This is our bright and neutral white. It’s got the teeniest bit of pigment in it so it stays bright without feeling stark or clinical. There is no real undertone here, so it works with almost anything.

Perfect for:

  • Bouncing light around a space
  • Any style, traditional or modern
  • Creating a light, fresh feel in a room
  • Providing a crisp contrast to features against the walls
  • A clean and crisp trim colour

It makes spaces feel light and open. It's a no brainer if you just want a white that works everywhere.

Old School

Old School is our warm, soft white with a subtle beige undertone — not too pink and not too yellow. It’s still a bright white, but it's a bit softer than So Fresh and So Clean.

Perfect for:

  • Pairing with warm undertones in a space
  • South-facing or lower-light rooms to add warmth
  • Suits heritage homes, but also modern spaces with lots of timber
  • A softer, lived-in feel rather than crisp gallery look
  • Use it on the wall, ceilings and trims to keep the undertone consistent

The only time this hue won't work is if you have lots of cool colours in the space (think cool greys and cool blues). Putting this white up against colder tones will clash with its warm undertone and can make it feel a bit dated.

Which one should you choose?

Start by comparing it to the main features in the room — your tiles, floorboards, cabinets etc. Consider how the colour feels against these materials and what one settles in best.

Look at your swatch throughout the day and pay attention to how your unique lighting makes it change.

Many of our customers use both in the same home — So Fresh and So Clean in the bathrooms (especially against white tiles) and Old School in the main living areas, with warm floorboards or stone.

IN SHORT: If you want bright and crisp → go So Fresh and So Clean. If you have warm undertones and want soft and calm → go Old School.

Do you have other whites?

Yep, we sure do. We can create custom matches if you've already found the one or in our range we have two more options:

Paper Plane — our cool, crisp white. This is often used to complement cool finishes like tiles and cabinets. Most of the time working with what you have is better than fighting it. If you've got cool tiles or cabinets you can't change, pick the paint that works best with them and then use warm lighting to help it feel softer.

C.R.E.A.M. — our warm off-white. This is a double strength of our Old School hue. It feels even softer and is a great way to enhance that cozy feel in a room. It will provide less contrast to your floorboards etc and soften the whole space. It looks great 'colour drenched' over the whole room, used on the ceiling, walls and trims. If you want lighter trims and ceilings pair it with Old School to match the undertone.

Let's roll!

All our paints are low-VOC, well pigmented, and made to stand up in real family life. They wear well, clean easily, and don’t have a strong odour — so all you have to worry about is picking the colour.

If you have questions about which white will work best in your space just let us know, we’re always happy to help.

Happy Sampling!
