Primer, or Prep Plus — what you need to know
Primer (or Prep Plus as we call it at Tint) can raise a lot of questions. So we’ve pulled together some top tips to help you master that perfect paint prep.
Prep Plus paint — what exactly is it?
Prep paint is used to prepare a surface before applying your final paint finish.
Tint’s Prep Plus is suitable for both interior and exterior projects. Like all Tint paints, it’s vegan, low odour, and low VOC.
It also comes with some extra benefits:
- Fast drying
- Easy to sand
- High coverage
- Seals the surface underneath
- Helps your topcoat colour really pop
When should you use Prep Plus?
It depends on what you’re painting.
If you’re painting over an existing wall in good condition and not making a major colour change, primer usually isn’t necessary—especially with Tint paints, which are self-priming.
That said, if you want to go the extra mile, a single coat of Prep Plus can help create the perfect base and ensure your final colour looks its best.
Prep Plus becomes essential when you’re making bigger changes. Apply two coats if you’re painting:
- Large marked or stained walls
- Walls with repaired patches (larger than a coin)
- Previously painted high-gloss surfaces
- Previously painted surfaces in a much darker or very different colour
- Unpainted surfaces such as plasterboard, brick, masonry, MDF, cement sheet, render, wood, metal, or laminate

Yep to prep!
Priming doesn’t take much extra effort, and it can make a big difference to the longevity and quality of your paint job.
Most of the work lies in preparing your space—cleaning, repairing, filling cracks, moving furniture, and taping edges. Once that’s done, applying Prep Plus is smooth and easy.
